BEIJING, 15 July (Xinhua)। The Chinese government has introduced a new regulation to protect the eyesight of children and teenagers engaged in online after-school training programs.

The duration of each online training session shall not exceed 40 minutes and the interval between two sessions should not be less than 10 minutes, according to guidelines jointly issued Monday by six central agencies including the Ministry of Education (MOE). According to the guidelines, the online after-school training platforms must provide eyesight-protection user interface design, as well as parent control functions.

In addition, the guidelines require live broadcast lessons for mainland students in compulsory education to be completed no later than 9 p.m. to give them enough sleep. The high incidence of myopia among young students is a major health problem in China.

China rolled out a new scheme last August to curb the rise in myopia among children and teenagers, which aims to keep the myopia rate among 6-year-old kids at around 3 percent by 2030, with the incidence among primary school kids to drop below 38 percent, and the rate among junior and senior high school students to fall below 60 percent and 70 percent, respectively.
