Kathmandu, May 20 : The incumbent government has taken a historical step today by releasing an updated map (political and administrative) incorporating Lipulek, Limpiyadhura and Kalapani area.

Minister for Land Management, Cooperatives and Poverty Alleviation, Padma Kumari Aryal, released the map at a function held at Singha Durbar. It may be noted that the Council of Ministers had approved the updated map on May 18.

The updated, political and administrative map of the country has been released incorporating origin of the Kali river like Gunji, Nabhi and Kuti, which had been left out in the previous map.

With the release of the new map, it has been again proved that the government of Nepal is committed to protecting its nationality and sovereignty. The new map has been released as per the announcement made by President Bidya Devi Bhandari on May 15 in the policy and programme brought by the government for coming fiscal year 2020/21.

Releasing the map, Minister Aryal expressed happiness for being able release the new map, and extended gratitude for the support and interest shown by all Nepalis to build a prestigious history.

“This opportunity to release Nepal’s updated map is an historic hour of happiness for the entire nation and its people. I have taken this moment as the most memorable moment of this era,” she said.

Saying Chairperson of the Nepal Communist Party and Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli had firmly stood in favour of nationality, she shared, “The government is determined to protect nationality and territorial integrity and to fulfill the nation’s goal of “Prosperous Nepal, Happy Nepalis.”

According to the Sugauli treaty reached between Nepal and the then East-India Company on March 4, 1816, Kali Nadi and the area east of it are integral part of Nepal.

India had stationed security forces in Nepali territories at 17 places including Kalapani for its safety during India-China war in 1962. The forces were later removed from 15 places.

However, they are yet to vacate two areas in Kalapani. Around 385 square meters lands of Nepal have been encroached upon in the area. In previous political map of Nepal, some places like Gunji, Navi and Kuti east of Kali Nadi were excluded. However, this updated political map of Nepal has incorporated these areas and the area covering the origin of Kali Nadi to Limpiyadhura.

A Cabinet meeting on May 11 endorsed publication of an updated political map of Nepal that incorporates Lipulek, Limpiyadhura and Kalapani.
Meanwhile, Minister Aryal has said that the Nepal government was committed to resolving border disputes through bilateral talks and diplomatic channel with neighbouring India.

She expressed her hope that India would take the publication of Nepal’s political map positively.

This updated map of Nepal would be used in government documents and curriculum, he said.

In another context, she stressed the need for efforts and help of all to fight COVID-19.

Director General of the Survey Department Prakash Joshi said the updated map incorporates all 753 local levels and Nepal’s international borders.
